Favourites images of 2017 – Behind the lens – Daniel Ricciardo

2017 is almost over and so its time to look back at the year that was.
So I have chosen my ten favorite shots from the year and will break down how they came about in my behind the lens series. The images are in no particular as its hard to pick a favorite order.

First up is this shot of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Driver and Aussie Daniel Ricciardo.
This was commissioned by Aston Martin as a promotion for the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage S Red Bull Racing Edition.
It was photographed in Melbourne during Grand Prix week, between commitments for Ricciardo.
I knew I would have only a small window of opportunity to get the shot as his schedule was tight. So I had camera and lights all set up and ready to go before he arrived.
The set up was my Nikon D4s with AFS 24-70mm lens attached.
As light was non-existent, the sun had already set, I used 4 of my Nikon SB800 Speedlights in Nikon Creative Light System (CLS) mode. The Nikon CLS allows Nikon flashes to talk to each other using infrared to work out the correct TTL exposure and can be all controlled by a single master flash unit on camera. For this set up I had a master on camera, one flash to camera right and two to camera left.
When Ricciardo arrived, I positioned him in front of the car and then took a quick test shot to confirm exposure adjustments. I then had enough time to get a couple of different posses with him before our time was up.
The above shot was one of my favorites from the shoot as it shows his massive smile for which he has become famous for.
Tune in for the next one later today.
